The Necessity of Bio-Identical Hormones
When it comes to hormone replacement therapy, many Total Med Solutions patients have a lot of questions for our patient counselors. We have often heard questions about the hormones used in HRT, with many patients interested in learning what exactly bio-identical hormones are.
Many patients receive HRT from Total Med Solutions in Dallas or in Plano because they are undergoing menopause. As women’s bodies undergo the menopausal process, the natural levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones begin to decline. These hormones are important to women; when these hormone levels begin to change so abruptly, many women experience several symptoms that range from hot flashes, moodiness and vaginal dryness to osteoporosis.
What do Bio-Identical Hormones Do?
HRT alleviates the symptoms of menopause be replenishing the declining hormone levels. When it comes to replenishing declining hormone levels, many patients opt for “bio-identical” hormones. Bio-identical hormones are estrogen and progesterone that are derived from natural sources and are entirely non-synthetic.
Bio-identical hormones are derives from plant sources such as yams or soybeans, as these contain phytoestrogens that are converted to hormones identical to the ones produced in the bodies. Given that the human body lacks the enzymes required to convert the hormones naturally, enzymatic processes in laboratories safely produce the bio-identical hormones.
Why is it important?
Even though the hormones are plant-sources, biologically, these hormones are identical in chemical structure and function those that the human body would create. This is important to understand because many commercially available synthetic hormones do not produce the same desirable effects as the body’s own hormones.
Bio-identical hormones are used in pre-menstrual syndrome, peri-menopause, and post-menopause in women to lessen the effects of the declines that these hormones experience in the mature years of life.
If you or a woman in your life is learning about the menopause and the benefits that bio-identical hormones may have for their HRT, visit your local Total Med Solutions (we have locations in Plano and in Dallas) to speak to a patient counselor.
